Sidney's undergraduate and postgraduate common rooms and student-run bar provide our student community with a fun and sociable environment to kick back and relax.

Sidney's undergraduate common room is known as the Junior Common Room (JCR), and the postgraduate common room is known as the Middle Common Room (MCR).

JCR and MCR are typically terms used to describe undergraduate and postgraduate communities at Cambridge Colleges, as well as the spaces they share around each College.

The JCR and MCR are at the heart of College life for our student communities.

Sidney Sussex College Students Union (SSCSU)

SSCSU is the representative body for students at Sidney. All students are eligible to stand and vote in elections and can propose and vote on motions in regular ‘open meetings’ held in the bar.

SSCSU officers represent student views to the College while our welfare officers provide sexual health supplies and deal with welfare issues. Representative officers in collaboration with the access officer work to make Sidney as inclusive as possible, both for current and prospective students. SSCSU is also responsible for running our College bar, funding student societies, and organising social events.

Junior Common Room (JCR)

The JCR is equipped with comfy sofas, chairs, satellite TV and DVD player, a games console, and lots of games!

There is also a smaller common room for undergraduates equipped with a TV which is located in Cromwell Court.

The JCR provides a great space for students to socialise and relax.

Middle Common Room (MCR)

Postgraduate students can relax, study, or socialise in our MCR complex - a large room for the exclusive use of Sidney postgraduates. The MCR is equipped with sofas, work spaces, a TV with games consoles, and a separate kitchen space.

Student bar

The Sidney bar is run by students (in conjunction with the College management) and is one of the cheapest in Cambridge!

Students can kick back and enjoy a game of pool or table football, or just relax and take in the beautiful views looking out across the Master's garden.

Our students host parties and quiz nights several times each term.
