The Telephone Campaign is a fantastic way for us to stay connected with our alumni and an essential part of our fundraising activities.

It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of our sovereign Queen, Elizabeth. Out of respect for this period of national mourning, calling will not take place on the day of the Queen’s funeral.
It has been decided that the other scheduled calling days will continue as planned, but if you have been notified that a student will be calling you and would prefer not to receive a call, please let us know by emailing
development@sid.cam.ac.uk.

At Sidney, we are committed to academic excellence and providing a first-class education to the brightest minds. We see our impact in disseminating and increasing knowledge through high quality teaching and research; widening participation to create a diverse and inclusive student body; enabling everyone in our community to flourish; and creating a sustainable and secure Sidney for the future. It is with the philanthropic support from our alumni community that we have been able to do this.

Between 12 – 26 September, a team of Sidney students will be calling alumni to talk about our current fundraising priorities, collect feedback, thank our donors, and invite alumni to join our community of supporters. They are looking forward to sharing what has been happening in the College over the past year and learning what alumni have gone on to do since leaving Sidney.

All those who are called will receive an email or postcard beforehand to let them know about the campaign with more information to contact us if they would like to pre-schedule the call, opt out, or to make a gift in advance.

To encourage our community to come together to support Sidney, David Fyfe, a fellow alumnus, has pledged to give an additional £200 if you choose to set up a regular donation for the first time.

"Making sure that a student accepted into Sidney Sussex makes the most of this major “sliding door” in his/her life has been the purpose of my gift to fund an experienced resource in the College who not only focuses on recruiting students from backgrounds from which entry into Cambridge is often the “impossible dream” but helps those students who, for one reason or another, struggle with the academics or other aspects of life while a member of the College.

As someone who not only came to Sidney from a school that had not sent anyone to Oxbridge for at least 10 years but was academically very rusty after a year in industry before matriculating and who nearly didn’t make it in the first year exams and who, frankly, was left too much alone to make my missteps, I am deeply aware of some of the challenges some students face and therefore am happy to contribute to others not having to face such traumas. Please join me in this endeavour!!"

What if I wish to donate, but don’t feel comfortable providing my details over the phone?

The Development team is committed to protecting your data and privacy. We have invested in secure systems that allow for over the phone payment, but if you prefer you can also make your gift via our website or we can provide details for bank transfer. Further details about our data and privacy policy can be found here.

Will I be updated on how my donations are used?

We love to share updates about the impact of your generosity. Post-campaign, all alumni will be receiving a new, annual, report that sets out how donations in the last financial year have been used and the difference that they have made to the College. Throughout the year we will also be sharing updates about the amount of funds raised by the Sidney community during the telephone campaign, and what your collective effort has achieved. And of course, you are always welcome to visit the College and see the impact of your gift for yourself!

What if I don’t wish to donate?

We understand that you may not be in a position to donate, however, we would still love to make contact with you to hear about your memories of Sidney and update you on College news. Our callers learn a lot from the diverse experiences of the alumni they talk to, and we really value your feedback on our fundraising priorities. Our students would be delighted to talk with you!

How will I know this isn’t a scam?

Our callers will be introducing themselves as students from Sidney Sussex, and can send you a verification email confirming that they are calling from Sidney Sussex College. They will be calling from a Cambridge number (beginning 01223). If you would prefer not to make your gift over the phone, our callers can direct you to our website to make your gift. And of course, if you have any questions at all you are very welcome to contact the Development and Alumni Relations Office directly.

Are the student callers being paid to call me?

We believe in fairly reimbursing our students for their time and experience. All callers are employed by Sidney Sussex College and paid £10.68 an hour; this remuneration is not tied to the amount each caller raises. However, 100% of your gift will go towards the fund that you choose to support.

What if I change my mind?

You are entitled to a refund of your donation at any point; please contact the Development and Alumni Relations Office directly for further information.
