Alessandro, a third-year Sidney chemist, and a group of Sidney friends have come up with an inventive idea involving a rowing machine and a chess board to raise money for the Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

On Sunday 24 April, a group of Sidney students will be getting together in Sidney’s squash court to raise money for the Ukraine Crisis Appeal. They will be partaking in an activity involving chess and rowing – an unusual combination – and Alessandro is one of the students involved who is on hand to let us know more.

“"Hello! I'm Alessandro, a third-year chemist, and I am the founder of Sidney Sussex Banging Chess Society. I started rowing this year at the Sidney Sussex Boat Club and while I was going to the weekly chess club meeting after training on the erg, I wondered if, much like chess boxing, you could fuse the two; so I did! I thought I could also try to increase the good in the world (even if for a tiny bit) by turning it into an event to fundraise for the Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

“The chaotic mess that is chess erg will take place on Sunday 24 April at 2.00pm (BST) in Sidney’s squash court. Follow the Sidney Instagram account on 24 April where I’ll be taking over the Instagram Stories so you can see what we get up to.

“Visit our JustGiving page to donate: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/chessxerg. Thanks very much.”

Well done to all other students who helped with the promotion and organisation of the activity, including Shathar Mahmood, FizzMcNally, Rushabh Shah and Amelia Weir and Felicia Cebotari. We hope you have fun on the day!
