Lent Bumps were raced for the first time in two years between the 1 - 5 March 2022. Sidney had a fantastic show this year, only being bumped once across all three crews. Sidney’s first women’s crew (W1) achieved blades after bumping four times in four days.

What are the Lent Bumps?

The 2km course begins with all boats a boat length and a half apart and on the sound of the cannon, all boats must row, gaining on the crew ahead and keeping ahead of the crew behind. When the gap between boats is closed, the boat must then physically hit the other boat (bumping!) to confirm the win.

How did Sidney's crews get on?

Sidney’s first women’s crew (W1) had a fantastic Bumps. Having bumped the Girton crew on day two, Sidney W1 went on to bump Homerton and Murray Edwards to establish Sidney W1 as a division one crew for the first time in 18 years.

Sidney went on to bump Darwin W1 on day four to achieve blades. An incredible feat for an incredible crew. To be a division one crew in Cambridge is no small feat and we look forward to seeing what they achieve racing at this new standard.

Sidney’s second women’s crew (W2) had a good start and bumped Clare Hall, but were unable to catch Newnham on day three and were caught by Queens’ on the final day.

The Sidney’s first men’s crew (M1) had a solid first day and rowed over after boats in front bumped out. M1 bumped Hughes Hall on day two, and followed up by bumping Corpus Christi on day three. This was despite crashing - an impressive recovery and row from the crew in true bumps spirit.

On the final day, M1 rowed over, following a close competition between boats ahead but still steaming ahead of all the competition behind.

Thank you to the bank parties and supporters, and to CamFM, which provided brilliant coverage of the 2022 Bumps. Learn more about the Bumps on the Cambridge University Boat Club (CUBC) website.
